As a traditional midwife, I believe —

Midwifery care has been hijacked by the force of modernity, specifically obstetrics - a force many women marry themselves to out of fear, ignorance, and dependence.

Midwifery care (sometimes even 'home birth’ midwifery care) has become hyper-medicalized and physician-centered and pregnancy and birth are treated as pathological illness.

I believe pregnancy and birth are normal physiological events of a woman’s life.

I am a gatekeeper of the divinely inspired, normal physiology of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum. Through midwifery care, I devote myself to supporting this physiology and its vitality.

I am primed with the skills to practice within both the Midwifery Model Model of Care and the Wise Woman Tradition. This means, I believe birth is best left undisturbed; yet I am trained to clinically monitor, assess, ‘step in’ and ‘refer out’ should risk or emergency arise.
(Prevention goes a long way here.)

I believe a woman’s body is only ever in favor of her highest good.

Yes. Even in the case of sickness and disease - the body is only ever working to protect, fight, and heal. I do not believe abnormal variations of physiology (ie: elevated blood pressure) mean the body is broken or doing the wrong thing. It’s quite the contrary - elevated BP is a survival mechanism - a sign that the body is doing the right thing with the circumstance at hand. The body is infinitely wise.

When abnormal variations/pathologic symptoms arise, a higher level of care (such as obstetrics) may be recommended. This is not failure. Women can birth just as freely with their feet on the concrete floor of a hospital as they can with their feet on the red clay of the Georgia forest.

I believe women cannot empower women to embrace the action of intuition, autonomy, and sovereignty until they do it themselves.

I will not breach my own beliefs, boundaries, and intuition for anyone.

Even birthing women.

I expect the women called to work with me to do the same.

The mother-midwife relationship is a two-way street of 100% equality and 0% hierarchy. Coercion and manipulation are not welcome on either end.

If women have a Vision for their birth that is beyond my midwifery threshold and scope of practice, I will respectfully make it known and support them in finding a better fit for their Vision.

I believe midwifery care should move slow, with intention, and with conscious support for what is showing up in the body, mind, and spirit of a woman.

I place a high value on open, honest communication that breeds clarity and confidence between myself and women called to work with me.

Political check boxes will never come before a woman’s right to make her own birth choices.

I value authentic relationships over mono-tone professionalism. Women are more than their fundal heights and babies are more than their heart tones.

Everything matters.

I believe birth is a continuum of freedom.

And birth is only as free as the woman who enters its portal, regardless of anything else happening around her.

Freedom in birth flows from the heart of the birthing woman.

I do not make agreements with women who believe they can outsource their freedom - who believe they are ONLY free in the right location, with the right person, playing the right song, doing the right dance. This is victim mentality.

Midwifery care is about guiding women home to the frequency of freedom.
Only then can women truly activate their intuition, autonomy, and sovereignty.
